i'm 14 years old and i got my first period about a year and a half ago. i play sports a lot, so i figured i'd finally try tampons. i read the directions, i looked at websites online, i pretty much know how to use them and i know where its supposed to go. one problem, the applicator won't go in! the most i usually get in is like 1/3 of the applicator, and then it hurts too much to put it any further. i tried sitting on the toilet, laying down, putting one foot on the toilet, putting ky lubricant on the applicator, nothing works! please help, any tips or suggestions would be really helpful...and please don't say "i guess you'll have to keep wearing pads" because its really not an option for me because summer is here and i swim a lot and i go to sports camps. thanks =)

I'd really like to know where some people get their information from. Really cancer, too young etc?

Listen to the answers that are saying you need to relax and check the angle you're trying to insert it. I knew someone who never could figure out the applicators, she used OB instead, you can try that too.

Make sure you're trying with a slender/junior/teen tampon. Plastic is easiest, and try when your flow is heavy for extra lubrication. Find the position most comfortable for you and aim it towards the small of your back. If it hurts stop and try to change the angle. I always found twisting the applicator while I was inserting it really helped.

Good luck.

Well, the people above gave you tips on how to convince your mom, but it's not worth it to argue with your mom it will just cause fights and she probably won't give in. Here are some tips however for hiding your pads. So you don't want anybody to see you taking a pad out of your bag, who does? The pocket doesn't work so well a lot of the time because they stick out of the top, so here are some ideas.. Do you have boots? Uggs? Fuggs? Snow boots? Whatever type of boot you wear to school. Stick some in your boot so that they are always with you! If you are at the point where you carry a binder with you everywhere between classes then have a special place in your binder or get an acordian (sp?) folder and store them in one of the slots, then just take the binder into the stall with you. Neither of these work? Most schools/public places have a pad/tampon dispensing machine in their bathroom and they usually cost 25 or 50 cents. So bring some quarters with you and buy them there if you can afford to do so. Always have back-up though, incase they are out. One more idea.. Depending on the type of toilets your school has you might be able to hide a couple of pads back there at the beginning of the day, I doubt anyone will be sticking their hand back there. Otherwise there is usually a brown paper bag in the metal box where you put dirty products and you can put it outside of the paper bag (inbetween metal and bag) where it's not very noticable to people, or pick up the bag, put a few pads down on the bottom and place the bag back on top. People usually don't go snooping around in the stalls so those could work too. Hope I helped!

You HAVE to relax! I used my first tampon a period ago even though I got my period 3 years ago. I stair at the drain in my sink and push it in staring at the drain. Or my friend puts one leg on the toilet and puts her's in. My other friend lays on a bed. You just have to find the one that is most relaxing. It took me 3 years to try to put a tampon in, you just have to relax, relax, relax. Also use a plastic applitcator, or use KY jell.
When I used a cardboard applicator I used KY jell. Just ask your mom if she could get some for that, that is what I did.

I haven't started wearing tampons yet, I'm not very athletic. If you can't get it in, even after asking your mother/sister to help, you might want to try a tampon without an applicator. You can probably remove the applicator from the tampons you're using now and do it, or buy a brand that doesn;t come with one (OB?).

You're probably stressing yourself out too much about it. Relax, take some deep breaths and calm down. Have you tried the junior tampons? They're slimmer and go in much easier. I'm going to assume you're not sexually active so you're hymen might still be in place too. Keep trying with the junior tampons and remember to RELAX. All that stress and clenching is not going to help. Once you get the hang of it, it will be pretty easy.

aw this reminds me of when i first tried... the first time i tried to put a tampon in i was 14 and i started crying my eyes out..
anyways, the way i find it easiest is just standing up straight and kind of bending your knees and inserting it that way.. i know you can only get it up a third of of the way, so you're gonna have to kind of jiggle it around so you can find the tube it's supposed to go up, it's gonna be really hard for you because i'm assuming your a virgin so you're whole "area" is virtually unused... and not stretched.. (i know it sounds gross).. but yeah so when you get it in a third of the way just move it around and you'll find the right place and it'll go up, and once you use a tampon once you'll never go back to pads.

also you might be hitting like the wall of your canal and not going up the tube, if you're hitting it on the wrong angle you'll never be able to get it up there !

:o)

Just try relaxing a bit beforehand, they are really hard to get used to, I've found. The OB tampons (I think they still make them) are pretty small or you could try a brand that is made for slender figures.

make sure you've got it at the right angle, like 45 degrees. This means aim it for the spot on your back that is the sme height as your belly button. You could also try a smaller one.

Completely relax yourself, don't tense up. And double check on the angle in which you're trying to insert it. It should be going towards your back, not straight up. Good luck!

Tampons come in different shapes & sizes.
I would talk with your mom or a close girlfriend, who is already using them. They could better advise you in person.
Clearly, you need someone to guide you in your journey of the tampon. :)
