The stats I would like to have on my computer are:
Intel Pentium IV Processor 2 Ghz +
512 to 1000MB of System Ram
8x DVD - Rom Drive
ATI x600 series +, ATI Radeon 9500 series +, NVIDIA GeForce FX series or NVIDIA GeForce 6200 series +
That is what I need.
For the Video Card I would like ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card.

I need a Computer that i can play the new good RPG's, Strategy games and MMORPG's - any advice about which games i should get with the computer you recommend would be appreciated. Check the minimum required stats for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion ifyou are unsure about what i need. I would love it if you could find something in the $300 - $400 range. That's what i got to work with.

Gaming computers are more expensive than regular general-purpose units. To play the best games at high resolutions you'll need a very good video card - and those START at around $200.

Sure, you can get a decent video card for about $100 like a Geforce 7600GT (which would be a big improvement over a $60 card like a 7300GT) but you won't get super-high framerates like someone who's running an 8800 GTS or Radeon X1950XT.

I recommend looking on Ebay for a used system that's maybe a year or two old- maybe something with an AMD Athlon 3200+ (which is faster than a 2Ghz Pentium 4) and has 1gb of memory. Then you could add the video card and be set.

For a new computer, $400 would get you a barebones unit without an operating system.

Playing better games on a basic computer never gives any satisfaction.

Building a computer of that spec should be really easy, just look on ebay, there will be all the stuff you need from peoples cast offs, as they upgrade. Won't cost you much at all.

Some of the stuff you specify, you'll be hard pressed to find for sale new these days, such as the Processor and some of the graphics cards you name. The Graphics cards you name will largely not run most of the latest games. And I'm not sure if they even make DVD-Rom drives any more, rewritable is now the current standard, and dual layer if you want to be flash.

Maybe its time to start looking through google, and seeing whats for sale these days, and read a few reviews.

Why break the bank on a computer when the gaming systems actually do a better job on games? A PS3 (even a PS2) or Wii does a better job at gaming than $2000 computer (at 1/5 the cost or less). Buy a computer to surf the net, run whatever software you need to run, and buy a gaming system to handle the games. You will come out $800 - $1000 ahead in the game.

Try Dell or HP. They should have wicked desktops at giveaway prices. Dells would be better because its built on Alienware technology. Or get a new alienware. I wouldn't advise laptops for gaming though.

You can build a decent machine for about $1200 to $2400, in my honest opinion. Anything less will play the games verrrrrry slooowly.
