Middle age is somewhere along the path to being old. It never happens to you. Those aged 25 say it starts at 35. By the time they reach 40, they say it starts at 50. Then when they start drawing their pensions they feel it's all behind them.

The span of our years used to be regarded as three score and ten. Therefore middle age is 35, numerically. As we now live beyond this on average, the time to pinpoint middle age has moved up.
Middle age is also a subjective state of mind. I know many young people in their twenties who think and act middle-aged, whilst others in their fifties still seem to have the vitality of youth about them.
