It is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS (a type of motor neurone disease); this condition is commonly known in the United States as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
It is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons. ALS is a disease marked by gradual degeneration of the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. In the United States it is popularly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after the famous baseball player who died from it in 1941. The disorder causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body. In ALS, both the upper motor neurons and the lower motor neurons degenerate or die, ceasing to send messages to muscles. Unable to function, the muscles gradually weaken, waste away (atrophy), and have fasciculations (twitches) because of denervation. Eventually, the brain completely loses its ability to initiate and control voluntary movement.
