Butane is a hydrocarbon and an alkane. It is made up of four covalently bonded carbons with sufficient hydrogens attached to each carbon (with covalent bonds). All bonds are single bonds in butane.

There are two isomers of butane, n-butane and isobutane.

N-butane is in the form of a chain. The first and last carbons on the chain have 3 hydrogens each attached by single bonds to them and the second and third carbons have 2 hydrogens each attached to them (by single bonds).

Isobutane has a central carbon with only one hydrogen bonded to it and three other carbon atoms bonded in addition to the hyrogen (all bonds are single bonds again). The carbons each have 3 hydrogens a piece bonded to them (again by single bonds).
