Pollutants(water soluble) depresses the freezing pt of water (consult Raoult's law). So, they will decrease the melting pt of ice.ice will melt at a lower temp.

A pollutant is a substance hich ill affect the purity of a pure substance in a number of ways. A pollutant added to water will lower its melting point and increase its boiling point.

All solvents depress the melting point (or freezing point to be specific). So, pollutants which are soluble, depress the freezing point of water (which is the same as melting point of ice). Pollutants which are not soluble have no direct effect but may prevent the supercooling of water (below 0C) by promoting the nucleation and growth of ice crystals.

Pollution raises the global temperature. The main cause of the warming is CO2. It attracts heat. Also, solar rays are filtered trough the ozone layer, 'hit' the Earth and are reflected back in space.... With a high layer of CO2 and other pollutant factors the rays hit the Earth's surface and are kept in our atmosphere (greenhouse effect). Temperature rise and ice melts.

pollutants will usually raise the melting point of ice and the boiling point of water.
