If not gaming you really dont need core duo, you get a amd 64 cpu and mobo combo for less than 100 bucks @ newegg.com And a good video card for a good price. 1gig of ram won't hurt either.

How did you killed your computer?
If you just want to spend $300, you can probably need to go to an asian family owned pc repair (in the telephone book, or vietnamese newspaper ads), because geek squad or any other company will charge $500 or more. But $300 is only going to get you typing, internet, just the basics....no way are you going to play the latest video game. Dude, the cpu alone can cost $300! So you looking at a used or mediocre system.

You may want to consider speding $600 or more on a new computer at your local electronic store. Don't buy a monitor or one that includes a monitor, since you already have one.

Also you may need to find someone to connect your old harddrive to the new computer, so that you can get back the old data...unless you don't need any of those old files.

If you killed your CPU and your mobo, you should consider replacing everything. Even if you decide not to, I guarantee that you will be doing it anyway in the next few months. Generally speaking if you had a big enough surge to hit those components, then the others are either fried or damaged too.
