Many people are un able to make plans into their own future. They live in the present and enjoy instant satisfaction only.
I really don't know if this is a mental condition, that can be changed.

I think so many people don't take advantage of the opportunities because they can't always see that they exist. If you have ever heard the expression "can't see the forest for the trees" it sums up what I mean. Looking from the outside in all you see are all these chances for betterment and you can't see why everyone wouldn't grab at these chances. From the inside looking out all some people see is the little world they live in. They're either too poor, tired or downtrodden to realize that the chances DO exist for them as well. It is sad in such a country but it's true. People grow up in poverty or abuse and that is the only life they know. They think when people talk about The American Dream that they're referring to someone else.
...this is my answer for some of the people. most of the others are just lazy and spoiled and want everything handed to them as opposed to going out and doing the work themselves. America is a wealthy country and rather than taking that for granted they should appreciate it and work so it can continue to be.

In America, it's true that there are numerous opportunities to succeed and make the world a better place. Despite all of the aid given to those who are seeking to find work and go to school, there are still many people who are stuck in their current position due to societal restraints. Gang affiliation, teen pregnancy, drug use, family obligations, and troubled youth are some reasons. While there are a lot of programs to help curb this and raise people above it, there are those who choose not to get help and aren't aware of the resources at their disposal.
As to making the world a better place for everyone, Americans are generally self-important. Not saying all, but many stand up for their own rights and not those of others. They look out for their own interest above all. Why save the environment when I'm making profits off its resources? Why save on gas, when I'd rather have my SUV? Why punish me by taking my taxes for welfare when I'm the one with a job? So on and so forth. This is a simplication as to go in depth would be a major societal study and require years of research.
Bottom line, we still haven't gotten it right, despite numerous attempts.

Most people from around the world think that America has streets paved with gold and money grows on trees. they tend to forget that this country was built on blood sweat and tears and there has been times that we are not the most popular country on the planet, but when a country is in peril we are usually the first one they call and we generally come to their aid, we are a forgiving people but we do not forget. remember this country was once oppressed by strong foreign powers and we rose above and defeated our enemies. Freedom is our life and we will stop at nothing to defend that. We can be your best Friend or your worst nightmare

I believe in the US, people are driven by a stigma associated with class(nobody really likes to just be middleclass). In other words, people are spending all of their paychecks to buy a larger house, new cars, buy better clothes-there is an endless supply of things to buy. And people will buy many things so they appear to be much better off than they are. The downside is that they don't save any money to start a business or go back to college (The US savings rate is a negative 1%, I believe). The buying of stuff drives the economy here and credit is quite loose. So it's very easy for people to get themselves in debt. Then, you have a vicious cycle of living paycheck to paycheck while having the appearance of being quite well off.

It is a complicated question. It basically comes down to choking on their success.
People have an easy life and feel entitled even if they do not do work.
These bad habits are passed on to their children and they then rationalize their lack of work.
I am a school teacher. I see this all the time. The children that are big losers are from single mothers. They were from single mothers. They make all the excuses they can and their children do also. They feel entitled to a good grade. They do no work and say it is because I am a racist that they get a bad grade.

simple - these endless opportunities are frequently fiction and not fact.
most americans improve their lives through education and that costs money. never has a top shelf education meant more to a persons future than it does now and never has that been harder to get and more expensive than now.
however, if you are a 'legacy' acceptance like george w bush, you can get that top shelf education without really earning.
and this sort of basic unfairness built into the system is at the root of the problem.
