In the past few weeks both George Bush and Tony Blair have been received by the Pope for advise and counselling.

Is the Pope secretly pulling all the strings in the background?

The Pope's role is to preserve all the ancient artifacts, literatures etc. from the days of Jesus onward.

No doubt because of the Roman Empire and it's history, there is a strong connection with the Empire and Church which probably in those days were very controversial when we in modern days look back. But you have to remember, that is what the world was like everywhere.

It was always pretty savage and war torn with "Kings" and rulers fighting to conquer new lands.

So why paint just the church as evil when the whole world was that way?

As man became more civilized, the church was able to focus more on it's piety rather than trying to sink sense in Roman rulers etc.

I think by far the greatest Pope in modern day memory is John Paul who just passed. He was a wonderful man and really reached out to the world, to the youth (if you saw him and I got to do so twice in my lifetime) you would know he exuded nothing but kindness and goodwill.

The fact he named this Pope (supposedly) as his successor must mean he had a lot of faith in him. JP is a hard act to follow, and it will take a lifetime for this Pope to rule and be judged in his own right, but as I said we were very lucky to have lived in an era where we were able to have JPs influence on the world.

Sadly I don't think the Christianity which lives in the USA compares much with the Christianity of the RC faith...the standards are not the same as some religions are too extreme and based on lies (that is what you get when you mix government and religion...do you really think they don't manipulate you people? Wake up!) to really work in today's world.

I think JP knew that, and only sought to bring people together with goodness, because all Jesus asked for was that people loved one another and lived a life that pleased the Lord. What's so wrong with that?

You never once heard the Pope blast anyone or judge them...as seems to be the mentality of many faiths...which is why I don't give them any credence whatsoever.

Everyone should live by example...and God doesn't want people's riches in his house...he wants the people.

No, The Pope is not the most important Man on the Planet. The strings he pulls are advising George and Tony to seek Peace. The both of them just wanted a photo op with the Top Dog for the Catholic Church. I think George, is trying to get Tony, as head of the World Bank.

The Pope had a Mother and father like any normal person. He has a job within the catholic church. He is no different than any man on earth. I can guarantee George Bush and Tony Blair did not visit the Pope for advise and counseling. As far as the Pope secretly pulling all the strings. The Pope is so far out of touch with reality it's not funny.

For sure not. The pope is only an authority for the catholic world. All the other religions and the other Christians do not recocnize him as a leader.
Also, he speaks about matters of belief and not of worldy matters.
Nontheless, the last pope (John Paul II) had a huge influence on the Soviet world and their democratication process. Because the pope is not involved in politics, he sometimes can have a fresh view on things that are not affected by everyday politics and power struggles.
But his influence in today's secularised world is that of a mere advicer and counsellor, apart from being the head of the catholic church that is of course.

Hello,

(ANS) The pope is an archaic relic from the past , he is irrelevant & so are most of his views in my opinion. The pope is the head of what is nothing more than just yet another political party in all but name (the roman catholic church). This an organization that is out of touch with modern day reality & founded on fairy stories & lies. No! wonder the pope wears funny clothes & pointy hats who could take someone like that seriously.

I suppose if you are a catholic you would think this but to the vast majority of the world he is just someone that is "there" without actually doing anything of much importance apart from hidding or moving around known paeodophiles within the church to abuse yet more children........and meeting the mccanns. Most important man in the world? Dont make me laugh.

Nobody was BURNED alive at the salem witches trials they were Hanged, secondly the catholic church (whilst guilty of a lot of wrong things in the past) had NOTHING to do with Salem. Suggest you get your facts straight before posting anything in here.

No, far from it. In fact the Vatican itself, has a dark and ugly past. The Spanish inquisition, the "missionary crusades", the Salem witch burnings etc all had the backing of the Vatican. The Catholic religion 400 years ago was very much what Islam is today. It was based on fear, power, intolerance, violence, and hatred. And let's not even get to the fact that the Vatican was/is slow to react to the many incidences of priest molestations. In the USA, finally, something is being done about this issue. What about the rest of the world?

The "love of God" was nowhere to be found in the Vatican, back in those days.

if you're a believer in conspiracy theories, then you must believe that he is the most important man on the planet. he should be an important figure for Catholics, and to all who believe the same faith he spreads. but i personally believe every individual is important, not just because we hold an office makes us important. we all have a purpose.
