I agree that it's a male dominated industry. No purveyor takes a woman seriously and if she has to be harsh then she's a bit**. It's just a centuries old thing that men cooked outside of the house and that women cooked for the family. Until the early 1900's. The Boston Cooking School was started by Fannie Farmer. Women learned that they didn't have to cook gruel and they could work outside the home. However, breaking through into a man's business has always been tough. Men still saw the woman as someone who should be home taking care of the house and kids.

Major kudos to Julia Child and Alice Waters for breaking the way for women in the restaurant business in the 60's. You may not always see a woman chef, but they're there.

Your just not going to the right restaurants there are a lot of good women chefs out there. Cat Cora comes to mind. She is great on Iron Chef America and I believe she has her own restarurant somewhere in the States.

Women are judged as not hard workers slow slackers not as good as men at some stuff. Chefs are usually men because they focus more on taste then design. If you go look at a cake decorator or a pastry cheft most of them are women because they pay attention to detail more then some men.

It is Physical hot sweaty work and a lot of women just are not that interested plus the wages are depressed in that area of restaurant work because immigrants regardless of their legal status will work for far less than what the position should be paying.

because it tends to be heavy lifting, working in a hot sweaty kitchen, and just generally a male dominated industry.
