Would they have done so on the day it was discovered he was sh*gging his secretary? What's he done since to merit this ovation? Not sh*gged another one?

Because he got thru ten years of a labour government doing sod all and getting paid handsomely for doing so.
..of course he got applauded...they all set out to do this...but so far he is the only one who got away with it.
Needless to say...there are still a few contenders for his crown.
