Put the key back in and turn to the on position. Move your shifter to neutral. then move it back to park and try it. with the key in the on position. turn on your headlights. get out and check to see if they are on. if there is no light you have a dead battery. if your lights work... the car should start as well. If not call your mechanic or the auto club and they will fix the problem for a fee. Is the car still under warranty? If so the whole thing will be a free fix. luck

the car needs to be in park to use electric door locks, it also needs to be in park or neutral to start, if that does not work, look at the steering collum about 3/4 of the way down, there is a rod that moves when put in park or neutral that engages a plastic switch, the switch has threads in and out for adjustment, make sure when you shut it off it didnt push that switch out of adjustment.

Turning the engine off before you put it in park shouldn't matter. there must be a problem with the electrics, or if you can't move the gear lever into park now the engine isn't running there may be a problem with the gear linkage

Did you get the key turned all the way off? Sounds like a dead battery.

put the key back in, turn it so that the power comes on, put your foot on the brake, put it back into park, then restart it.
That should do it.
When I was in the Army we had vehicle testing skills test, and that was one of them. The test is to keep on their toes about the vehicles they drive.
P.S. Vehicles will not start if they are in the parking gear.
