Try rubies of eventide. (www.rubiesofeventide.com)

It's got like 140 character classes you can choose from and several races you can be. It's true 3-d graphics and is FREE to play! (Screenshots http://www.rubiesofeventide.com/screenshots.html )

Not like FLYFF or rapplez where if you want to progress you have to buy things out of their store with real money.. there's no hidden agenda, it's actually free.

And the graphics are much better than the other games I've tried like runescape and maplestory. Some people are easy to please I guess.. they play those :)

Anyway.. there is also several different types of crafting and mining, etc. Lots to do and places to explore. It's a reall fun game.

There aren't a bunch of idiots on it either .. well, depending on the server you choose anyway (the "anything goes" servers are just that) since there are constantly GMs online that moderate the chat, etc.

It's free so give it a try. If you happen to be on the phoenix server, whisper Rapscallion to say hi!

First I'm going to tell you about the browser based MMORPGs, then I'll mention somewhere you can see the downloadable.
To play games in flash, there are Dragon Fable and Adventure Quest (In both you have to pay to have full access to the game, and notice that Dragon Fable is still under construction and that it's hard for non-members to login into AQ). There are also those community based flash games (that some people consider to be MMORPGs) that are becoming really popular: Gaia Online (that I already played and that is really cool), ClubPenguin, PuzzlePirates, and i think that Habbo goes the same way; in all of this games you create an avatar and play games like fishing to get money and personalize those avatars.
There’s also the pure browser based ones: Tibia is a fairly popular game, BiteFight and Knightfight are OK. Travian is a strategy MMOG, also pretty good. There’s also pokemon crater (but it has a lots of publicity) and, my personal favorite, FallenSword (it's interface is much like pokemoncrater, but it's a dungeon crawler. It also doesn’t have lots of publicity like pokemon crater, and has a guild system that stimulate interaction and stamina restrictions that allow players that don't have much time to remain competitive, not to mention the lottery and the auction system).
The downloadable... well, i think it's harder to speak about them. I'll also give you a link for the "List of free MMORPGs" on wikipedia, where you can see the downloadable games out there (in this list you can read about other browser based MMORPGs as well). Take a look at the websites and check the screenshots, maybe you'll find some that interest you. My favorites are Anarchy Online, Monsters and Me, Trickster Online (really good, you should consider this), Flyff and Silk Road. Seems like Rappelz is also pretty good.
There are also some really good free downloadable MMORPGs coming out: Sword of the new world (a.k.a. Granado Espada, where you can control up to three characters at once - but you'll have to pay so that you can get over a certain level) and the global version of Lunia (it's still on closed beta, but will soon come out - keep an eye on it).
See you.

A large number of really good MMORPGs shut down recently, some of them being the best-of-the-best of free RPG gaming on the internet. I can still tell you of a lot of downloadable RPGs/other games, as well as a few that need no download at all.

However, there are a still a number of decent RPGs remaining:
Conquer Online, Monster & Me and my personal favourite which is Eudemons Online. They all come from the same company called TQ Digital. They are some the main ones I recommend (esp. Eudemons).

If none of those take your fancy, you could always try: RAN Online (it's a campus MMORPG. It doesn't make sense when I say it, so go to their website which I'll list at the bottom), any of a number of Ragnarok Online public servers (I highly recommend AnimaRO for this. However, they all include a BIG download (over 1GB)), Shot Online (Golfing RPG), Tales of Pirates Online (also known as Pirate King Online for the Asian servers which have more appropriate event times for Australians/New Zealanders), Empire of Martial Heroes (formerly known as D.O Online), Supreme Desiny, and Knight Online.

Of the above listed, the best ones are: AnimaRO (the private Ragnarok server), Eudemons Online, Tales of Pirates Online, and Knight Online. So maybe look at those ones first.

If you don't like big client downloads and don't mind A LOT of reading (ie. MUDs, which are basically entirely text-based games), then try out Achaea (it has no client, you can use your browser, or even Telnet).

Monster & Me: http://www.monterandme.com
Eudemons Online: http://www.eudemonsonline.com
RAN Online: http://ranonline.e-games.com.my
AnimaRO: http://www.animaro.com
Shot Online: http://www.gamescampus.com/shotonline
Tales of Pirates Online (US servers): http://top.igg.com
Pirate King Online (Asia servers): http://www.piratekingonline.com
Empire of Martial Heroes: http://doonline.e-games.com.my
Supreme Destiny: http://sd.e-games.com.my
Knight Online: http://knightonline.e-games.com.my
Achaea - Dreams of Divine Lands: http://www.achaea.com (no client needed)

Furthermore, there is another game simply called SAGA. They are still in Alpha I think, going into closed Beta, but if you enjoy RTS, then you should try this game by lodging an application as an Alpha/Beta tester on their website and wait it out, hoping that they'll send you a confirmation email with your code and download link. It's an MMORTS and is one of the few of its kind. It is made by the lead programmer for Starcraft: Brood Wars, so you KNOW it's going to be big. It is free at the moment, but I think that in the end you may need to purchase the game for a small fee. However, that won't be for some time. If you want, scope it out here: http://www.playsaga.com

There are also games such as Xiah and 9 Dragons out there, but I've never ever tried them so I can't tell you what they're like. They're probably not too bad though. If you wish to try these out, just google them and they should be really easy to find (if not, add the term "online" or "game" to the end of your search terms. There is an even more comperhensive list of games at www.mmorpg.com but there are a lot of games on there that aren't free, so finding one that is free on there will require a lot of searching.

Edit: In seeing the above, I am also reminded of these games that I would like to add, which are all browser based/VERY small client and I will briefly mention below:

Dark Swords: http://www.darkswords.eu (requires a very minute client download, but it is no big deal, even for dial-up. Fun little game and has a very nice, unique system of play).

Techwarrior: http://www.techwarrior.com (comes from the same company as KnightFight, but has a slightly different system. It also has a futuristic robotic theme instead of medieval knights).

Lords of Legend: http://www.lordsoflegend.com (a simple browser-based, turn-based game. Fun, but because of it's design, did not have a great lastability for me. Still, more fun than KnightFight and TechWarrior than the majority of people).

Race War Kingoms: http://www.racewarkingdoms.com (you can optionally purchase things to give yourself a major edge, but all but one item can be received through a purchase can be received through some hard work and a bit of luck. This one actually has the potential to MAKE YOU MONEY (or a new computer even), but you need to put in a significant amount of work to get yourself ahead of the people that pay to achieve this. It's quite worth having a quick look at if you're interested. If you want to make things slightly easier on yourself, choose one of the more recent servers).
