Robert Jordan is in Spain during the time of the Spanish Civil War. He elects to fight on the side of the Republicans. He becomes a demoitions expert and is on his way to blow up a train bridge with a group of guerillas. He falls in love with a young woman and gets advice from an older woman. I found it to be an exciting book to read. There are lots of digressions because the older woman, Pilar, is a wonderful storyteller. I thought each digression was worth reading.

Grumpy's wrong, or just doesn't have the stomache for historical literature. No one could, or can, craft a sentence like Hemingway. He was an amazing wordsmith and a great storyteller. Not too many happy endings, though.
Try that one on for size-- or maybe A Farewell To Arms first.

I agree with previous respondent - watch the film. It's not quite as boring as the book, though nearly. Be wary of Hemingway - vastly overrated, with a disturbing love of war and blood - he glorifies it!
