When 'making love' depends solely on sexual intercourse, then the term has lost it's 'magic' in a relationship. Pure intimacy does not mean having sex only, meaning to become one in flesh, but also to become one in sole and to connect intellectually and for that, sex is not necessary, in fact, sometimes even redundant.

I consider "making love" as the interaction of intimacies between two people who are using the method of the moment to communicate their feelings and the depth of their affection to one another. This can be intimate conversation, the communication of touch through a loving massage, an understanding look, a connection of spirits while viewing a sunset, that special "oneness" you experience as you dance, any number of things. Sex can certainly be included in the catch-all phrase, but by no means is a requirement for an activity to qualify as "making love" in this sense.

My beloved brother, God bless his dear soul, once told me of a dream he had. He was walking with the woman he loved. They were holding hands and sharing their thoughts. Then my brother looked at me and said," You know. You can be intimate without having sex."
Another defining moment in my relationship with him. I did not know, until then, that men knew this. But then ,my big brother was different. He was, ALWAYS be, a United States Marine, and also a poet, a romantic and a seeker of the truth.
I know that he found his truth in this life. I miss him terribly.

make for
make good ( a promise0
what do you make of it? consider
make off with

make over
make shift
make up
make it up to (compensate)
It has the making-...it may develop into........
Love--great liking /respect for/ without looking for profit.....
Love is not sex...nor sex love.
Sex often occurs where there is no love. Sexual relationship.
And love often occurs.. without sex.

Real Love, comes from The Heart. Sex doesn't. So, Sex & Love, has no connection. Society has made is so. But it has become an expression of Love. But should never be connected with Love, itself.

Absolutely. Ideally, that should come first before the physical part. Very thoughtful question, Howard.

I believe making love has the connotations of being sexually in volved. But does it have to always be that way? Personally I don't think so. Anymore than when two people engage in sexual intercourse it doesn't always mean there is love involved. Kind of thought provoking already this morning, Sarge!
