AGAINST RAP
1) Nobody can speak for today's youth. If youth culture is supposed to be about expression, uniqueness and validating your individual point of view then nobody can speak for everybody. Where are the statistics to prove that 51% or more of the youth of today, or the greatest statistical portion, even like rap?
2) And if rap is often about crime, self-promotion and being a minority, how can a criminal self promoting minority be considered an objective majority?
3) And rap originated in the 80's when nobody calling themselves a youth were even born. Wouldn't rap then be speaking for todays parents?
FOR RAP
1) It addresses topics that most youth wouldn't dare admit to with their parents
2) It is accessible without the need for a musical education or even a great command of complicated concepts
3) It demonstrates that youth do have an opinion that they want to express
FOR CARTOONS ARE FOR KIDS
1) Children can accept a cartoon character like a talking duck without the suspension of disbelief, adults generally cannot.
2) They can portray what Walt Disney called "The Plausible Impossible" in which physics can be demonstrated to work contrary to the laws of nature such as a man who can propel himself into the air by firing a shotgun at the ground or bullets that can round corners or being shot in the face but merely having all your hair swept back and your face turn black.
3) They are generally not considered prime time material which limits them to off-peak times and since this is viewing time for most children not adult cartoons find much airplay on normal commercial TV.
AGAINST CARTOONS ARE FOR KIDS
1) Computer animation, CGI, is really just a form of cartoon with a high level of detail
2) There are many sexually explicit cartoons designed to circumvent anti-pornography laws
3) Most anime deals with concepts and violence that is beyond the levels considered appropriate for young audiences

1. Todays youth are free and wild and uninhibited and unstructured just like a rap, also we're loud and sometimes annoying, just like rap.
2) Negative -if you look at some of the cartoons in the newspaper, they are used to spitefully/humorously make fun of politicians and that's definitely not for kids. Cartoons are just a symbol of simplicity so that a deeper message can be hidden in them.

1. that rap artists speak for today's youth.
Negative: Rap artists speak "to" today's youth, and perhaps
for a segment of today's youth, but not for the
majority of today's youth. That is reason many
of today's "adults" find Rap problematic. Because
of its mainstream status, the youth often "believe"
many of the things said by the artists and the lyrics
pertain to them, and by doing so, become part of
the problem. The level of violence experienced in
a ghetto, when voiced as lyrics to a popular song,
become "acceptable" to the youth living in areas
where such violence was absent, but who now
tend to see such violence as acceptable. Other
issues, such as sex, fidelity, respect (or the lack
there of for women), murder, chaos and dealing
with prejudice become "words" instead of real
concepts requiring debate and consideration.
It also promotes the attainment of wealth by
shortcut or illegal means as a legitimate path to
sucess and happiness because of past wrongs.
Finally, Rap promotes reductionism; "bring them
down to our level so we're all in the same game."
Word.
Afirmative: The repetative beat and sophmoric lyric appeals
to a youthful mind that seeks a release from the
order forced into their lives and provides a mind
freeing release with lyrical rebellion. Kids don't
kill people because of Rap any more than they
do because Bugs Bunny shoots another cartoon
character.
2. that cartoons are for kids
Negative: Cartoons are for both kids and adults. However,
not "all" cartoons for adults are for kids, and vice
versa. For example, "The Simpsons" is a TV
cartoon (a.k.a. animated series) that appeals to
both the child and the child in us all. There is a
level to the cartoon that appeals to kids (rebellion
teen-age/adolescent angst, simplicity, apparent
stupidity and hypocritical attitude of parents, etc.)
and yet there are references and adult themes
spread throughout. There are also references that
would require adult specific knowledge or having
lived in a time decades removed from the date of
the cartoon, which obviously means the cartoon
was produced to include an adult audience. The
bottom line is that cartoons "entertain" us by giving
us a non-threatening, make-believe world to see
ourselves portrayed with all our foibles exposed.
Affirmative: cartoons are for kids because they support a
make-believe world where real-life concerns are
absent or presented in a non-threatening way by
using characters that capture the attention of a
child (purple dinosaurs, fuzzy characters and
sponges with square pants). It allows sophisticated
themes to be presented in an educational way
without seeming to be a lesson to be learned.
