Microphones and I just don't get along. I've got my microphone attached to the computer's pink microphone jack which I'm certain is the right one for microphones. It's a CM300. It's not a bad microphone, I don't think it's anything mega-fantastic though. Anyway, when I record into it I can only just hear myself - it sounds really distant. The sound settings have the microphone unmuted and the sound at max. I know that the sound card is not faulty because I actually just had it working about 10 minutes ago for a few minutes and then when I tried to start a conversation on MSN and it went to test the mic sound levels and went back down to inaudible! It's really frustrating because I mostly use this computer for film editing so I actually need the microphone sometimes for more than just fun. My microphone thingy is REALTEK Audio Input. I have tested with other mics to the same effect and this mic works with other things. 5.1 surround sound as well. (sound cancellation/suppression not on)

How do I stop it from preventing feedback then? There is no squealy noise, just a very very quiet voice and by quiet I mean quiet compared to any other sound. The other sounds are at normal pitch so the volume should not have to be raised to match.

The reason there is no sound at the volume you have it is that it is preventing feed back, the squeely noise you hear over the speakers.
