it's a team ownership decision.

Those that don't have names on their back (Yankees, for example) do so with the idea, it's not about each individual, but rather about the team.

tradition .... maybe what the person says about the Yanks is true but no idea ....

The San diego Chargers were the first team to place the name on the back of the players in the early 1960s. They were in the AFL then and it was so when you saw the game on TV could better identify with the player.
This is true fact.

i always think of it this way if you dont have your name on your back and you want it then you just want attention i thinnk when your good enough for a name on back is when everyone knows you with out it. I mean penn state doesnt because Joe says that if you want people to know you then play better i agree
