I can understand why it was voted the greatest. Leave out the story and acting, which are both incredible. The way the film was made was incredible. It's taken for granted now, but there are so many things in that movie that are done all the time now, but just weren't done then. It was almost sacrilege back then. But Welles didn't care about rules, he did what he wanted, and if there wasn't a way to do it, he (or his crew) invented ways to do it. It is such a stylish movie, and fun to just watch. I love the way he shows the decline of a marriage in less than one minute and on one set. I love the deep focus, and the way that both foreground and background are equally in focus. I love the camera angles that make Kane look about 8 feet tall. Special sets had to be built so the camera could get low enough. Is it the best movie ever? I don't know. But I definitely understand why it was chosen. The sad thing is Welles was never ever given as much freedom again.

Although, I do like this film, I don't think its the greatest film ever. In my opinion the film was a little too long. I have seen better films. I thought African Queen and Casablanca were better films.

greatest of all time? no, not for me personally.
Annie Hall and Aliens are my personal greatest films. Kane might be on my list of 100, but not number 1.
Kane impacted me when i first saw it--then when i was older, after reading more about film, direction, setting, mood, etc., things really sort of fit into place. but number 1? not for me.
i said it before, i'll say it again--if you ask AFI or the Academy what the "greatest" is, i think you'll get one answer. if you ask "we the people" what the "greatest" is, i think the answer will be different.

Me. I think it's the best movie I've ever seen. It's totally brilliant. It's the kind of movie you see and then just stare at the screen and think "WOW" when it's over, and then think about it for 2 weeks after.

it has never made sense to me. They spend the whole movie trying to figure out what "Rosebud" is because it is the last word that he spoke. the problem is "How do they know what the last words he spoke were??????"
