I was having troubles with my original dvd burner for some time after I bought it - Every time I put a dvd in there it would conk out and disappear from My Computer and I wouldn't be able to open it except with the emergency-release button. When it disappeared from my computer the CD drive did as well. So I asked around quite a lot and nobody could really tell me anything that worked and my friend said it's probably broken so I just have to buy a new DVD burner.

So today I just bought a Sony DRU-830A DVD burner and chucked it in to the computer. I put it on slave because it's on the same chain as the original CD drive and I made sure a bajillion times that the drive was in right but when I turned on my computer it wasn't in my computer, although I could actually open it up when I pressed the button. I put in the cd that came with it but it didn't install drivers just Nero 7 Essentials :S

I'm not great with computers so it might be something blatantly obvious and I hope it is. HELP!

The DVD Jumper is on slave for sure and the CD drive is on master - the DVD burner I had before was on slave too. (CD is the first on the ribbon, the dvd is the 2nd). Nero also stuffed my computer up before as well but I'm only going to uninstall it once the dvd player is working.

I got a replacement cable today from a friend to try out which I will try when I get home but he thinks that it won't work, he's pretty certain it's to do with something else and he also told me to switch to cable select. Which I will do as well. If it is the cable I may have to try my old dvd burner with the new cable and see if its going to work anyway. I also triple checked and could not see any wig or glasses. I might have to buy a replacement wig and glasses, that could be the problem. The best idea yet is cable select switch so I'll see when I get home. Thankyou.

Make sure the jumper on the DVD drive is also set to slave. Try replacing the ribbon cable w/ a new one. It may have contributed to your troubles w/ the first DVD unit.

Hey - I just fixed that same problem -
It is the jumper that the issue - as soon as I matched the jumper to the same place it was on the unit I pulled out it worked fine... oh and that Nero software stinks, it keeps freezing my Dell all to heck. The original software that came with your machine will work better.

There are no drivers to install.
Make sure the other drive is set to master if this one is set to slave.
Maybe your cable is shot.
try using a different cable.
if that don't work, remove the cdom controler from your device manager and reboot to let Windows reinstall the drivers for it.

Your computer probably doesn't recognise your DVD burner because it's wearing a wig and sunglasses.
