Perot almost pulled it off before people saw him as going off the deep end. Fred Thompson is up with the front-runners, but hasn't been to a single debate.

Do you think this is an effective strategy?
If so, why does it work?

Thompson is smart to let the other candidates savage each other for a while. Then he can step in at the proper time with his above-the-fray demeanor.

You've got to keep a low profile, or else people will uncover all the dirt about you.

Don't want to waste time getting dirt on a guy who may not even be running, right?

Judging by that, my guess is that ol' Freddy might have a couple of skeletons in the closet.

No, everyone sees it as a ploy. Even those of us stupid to cast our 1992 votes with Perot and elect Bill Clinton by doing so. Most of us are smart enough to only make that mistake once.

It works well when people are dissatisfied with the slate of proposed candidates, but you need the reputation to go along with that announcement.

I came darned close to voting for Perot, back in those days.

ck, that makes no sense at all. Every candidate has skeletons and by not announcing doesn't mean that people aren't digging them up.. :) Why should he waste money now when he's already in second place (repub side), if you believe in polls.

Before you jump on the Thompson bandwagon, be-forewarned he is a neoconservative of the highest order.
The presidential candidate who has spent one third of his life as a corporate lobbyist in Washington, D.C.

I think the best way to elect a President is to vote for the one that the lib media wont talk about.
