What have you got going on in the exhaust? Sounds to me like a free flow issue. From header to end, your exhaust needs to be trimmed to match. If you have stock pipes, you need to upgrade. Also, make sure any catalytic converter, or muffler you use can handle the extra flow capacity of your headers.

if its backfiring that means its either out of time or you have a bad exhaust valve or weak springs. are you sure you have your cam timing right? was advance ground into the cam that wasnt compensated for? do you have stiff enough valve springs for your cam's rpm range? did you have your distributor recurved? whats the base timing?

This sounds like it could be some kind of a timing or fuel mixture issue.

Readjust your rocker arms. Only tighten 1/4 turn after they stop clacking.
