I have built my own computer. Nowadays I usually find that the savings are not that great. If I buy a piece at a time, by the time I collect all the pieces what began as an up-to-ate system is out-of-date. You have to be careful what components you select and make sure they are all compatible. I found that not everything is plug and play. Do a lot of research. Some components work better together than others. Also, one time I bought a motherboard and a CPU that were supposed to be compatible, but the CPU didn't work with the motherboard until the CPU was upgraded orwas it the motherboard that had to be upgraded? In any case, how can you upgrade if they don't work? I had to buy another CPU to get the system working. I still have the other CPU. Of course, it is outdated by now!

I did once, so I would say yes. But I would suggest that you only do it to either get an understanding of how they're put together or so that you can use specific components that you want in there. Building your own computer gives you complete control over everything that goes in.

I believe the days of building your own to save money are gone. Too many manufacturers have too many good machines for less that $600 ready to go.

It's really easy to assemble your own computer and it's also fun. Once you get everything put together and hit the switch....you just hope everything is right...then there's installing your operating system. That can be a nightmare, and I know of a couple of people that just went out and bought machines so they wouldn't have to install the OS.

Yes of course I have been doing so since about 1976.

I do it because I can put a better computer together, for cheaper, then I can buy off the shelf. Would I recommend this to everyone? Probably not. Computers are pretty good off the shelf and the prices are pretty good and it can be a pain some times dealing with it all.
