The thermometers are housed in a thermometer screen so that the temperature of the air is being measured. The screen is a white-painted louvred wooden box with a double roof facing away from the equator. The air can pass freely through the box but there is no direct or indirect transfer of solar radiation to the bulbs of the thermometers.

By measuring the temperature of the air, the temperature readings across the world can be compared with each other. A thermometer in direct sun will read higher but is subject to such variables as solar angle, cloud, fog, pollution etc.

They do in the shade, preferably in a shelter that is vented. If you do it in the sun, the temperature will be 30-40 degree higher. You will feel it more when you are under the sun. Now you give an example, the 85 you mentioned if that is in the shade, the temperature in direct sun is more likely to be 110.
