It's an injection so the easiest and cheapest thing to do is add an Induction kit. Cost about £40 easy to fit. Makes the engine breath in more air, So will give you a higher intake also meaning you'll use a little more fuel but only a tiny bit more. That'll give you about another 2-3 BHP. Sound well tough too. Makes the engine sound like V8.
Then you can add a straight though exhaust. Given a clearer way though you engine system they not cheap cost up to £300. That with the induction kit would give you 9-14 more BHP.

Realistacally not a great deal
Any mods you must inform the insurance co and that includes Audio upgrade, wheel upgrade and anything that you upgrade that was not standard on the car from the factory. If mods are done by a previous owner then it is still your responsibility to tel your insurance co. An engine mod or upgrade also has the same responsibility
If you want a quicker car then you need really to look at the larger engine car say the 1.4 or 1.6

Not a lot.
It has about 60bhp as standard, so even if you can get 5% from an intake kit, and another 5% from a more free-flowing exhaust you will still be below the 75bhp of a standard 1.4i.
Replacing the engine with a larger one is a lot of work, and will cost a lot more than trading up to another car with the larger engine factory-fitted.
