AC/DC! They have a better live show than any other rock band on earth (only the rolling stones come close), have been around for almost 40 years (and are supposed to be putting out a double album of new material sometime soon).

Not to mention there are only a handful of bands that can lose their lead singer (especially one as good as Bon Scott) and not totally fall apart.

The Rolling Stones

Led Zeppelin. They had a greater influence on rock music than any other band, and they have some of the best songs of all time, including Stairway to Heaven (which is arguably the best rock song of all time). Jimmy Page is regarded as one of the best guitarists (and in my opinion is the best guitarist) of all time. No other band's music can match the innovation and overall great musicianship that Led Zeppelin achieved.

If you mean rock and not heavy metal I would say
"The Who"

The Who are an English rock band that first formed in 1964 and grew to be considered one of the greatest and most influential bands in the world. They have been described, moreover, as "possibly the greatest live band ever." The primary lineup consisted of Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle and Keith Moon.

Keith Moon is my favourite drummer of all time.

There is no "best rock band ever" It's a matter of personal choice. Rush happens to be my favorite, but that's just me. Everyones opinion will vary on such a vague question.
