As others have stated, the world is not "round," however, the world does have a spherical shape because of pressure. All planets are under an immense amount of pressure from the atmosphere. As many physicists have proven, an object that is round applies this pressure evenly throughout the entire object. This keeps the planet from imploding.

The world isn't round, it is oval shaped. However, common man use the word round, as it is close to a sphere. This oval or spherical shape of the earth was acheived due to its rotation, (in a hot molten state) after breaking up from a hot mass, according to the big bang theory, which happened several billion years ago.

for one it's because of gravity pulling all objects on the surface towards the center of earths mass. Long ago, the earth may have been molten (the surface certainly was) making this process easier and faster. This would form a ball shaped sphere. Also, a sphere like the planet earth is the most efficient shape in the universe and all objects over time tend to form that shape through these natural processes, including erosion.
And yes, the earth is an oblate ellipsoid (oval) due to centrifugal force (the spinning on it's axis)

When the earth was in infancy and still a big molten glob it formed a shape that minimized surface tension, gravitational and rotational forces. The rotation forces mostly expain why the earth has an oval variation to it with its major axis along the equator. As it solidified it took on variations forming mountians and seas formed. Now most changes are due to weathering/erosion and use.

Only simple-minded people who can't think in 3-D space say the world is round. People who can think in 3-D say the world is spherical and people who understand the effects of rotation say the Earth is an oblate spheroid. Hope this helps!

I think you have read about the characteristics of the liquid .Every things in this universe want to have the minimum potential energy. and we know that when something become oval or round or circular then it's potential energy become the minimum. But you have to remind that everything cannt earned this that they want because of the barrier of themselves and the sorroundings. But our world is in an free space where it can easily turn itself in a circular one and earn the minimum potential energy.THANKS.
