yourself. you must first do extensive research on the animal in question.

I always tell people the most important part about getting a pet, other then just "wanting" one, is to do your research and educate yourself as much as possible. It is very stupid to purchase a pet knowing nothing about it.
The second most important part is pricing items and making sure you can afford everything you need for the animal.
After you research your pet and know you can afford it...then its time to prepare your home. All pets need some amount of pet-proofing. Even owning a hamster requires some amount of pet proofing. After all...what if it escapes out of its cage?
After pet proofing your home its time to get prepared. I always recommend purchasing all of the accessories for the animal BEFORE you bring the animal home. This way you can devote all your attention to the animal and not erecting a cage or searching around for things.
Hope this helps!

First lots and lots of research.
Then prepare all the money.
Then buy the accessories and food
Have everything ready before buying the pet and with research they should know how to help a new pet get adjusted with its new home
Keep researching all the time... you never stop learning about how to give your pet a better life

cost most probably...
you have to prepare yourself too. like, if you're ready to have a pet, ready to have "someone" depend on you for food, shelter, cleaning, health. because you just can't flush a fish down the toilet if you get fed up with it. you just can't throw a turtle back into the wild when it was bred in a facility. and it may cause ecological imbalance.
just like what happened to one of our rivers here. janitor fishes were an "in" thing and when people got tired of it they threw them in the river. and now our river has tons of janitor fishes and the plants died and there are no longer other fishes in that river.
this may be too much but i believe that committing to taking care of a pet for the rest of it's life is rather important when you are considering of getting one.

I would have to say .... prepare your pockets.. having a pet is a big responsibility and it costs alot of money.. paying for supplies, food, toys, vet bills, it gets pretty expensive.
