grade point average
when you attend school a transcript is kept--this transcript serves as a record of all of the grades you've achieved in your classes. Every grade has a point value:
A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0
lets say that you're taking 4 classes: Math, English, Science, and History, and this is what your report card looks like
A (4 points) - Math
B (3 points) - English
C (2 points) - Science
B (3 points) - History
you add all your points up (4+3+2+3=12pts)
next, you divide by the number of classes (which is 4)
12/4 = 3.0
your grade point average (GPA) would be a 3.0
sometimes you'll here the term "straight A student," this usually means that the student has a 4.0 GPA

A GPA is a grade point average and it essentially takes all of the grades throughout a year and averages them out. Some classes can be weighted therefore the grade made in that class would carry a larger percentage. This is usually done if the classes are more advanced than average for your level. When you finish high school universities look at your GPA to understand what type of student you are. The higher the GPA the better. A perfect GPA is 4 while a 2 is considered a minimum for entrance to most universities.

GPA stands for grade point average. It's usually on a 4 point scale with every A you've received getting 4 points, a B 3 and so on down. They average all of these grades from every class you've taken to get your GPA. The closer it is to 4 the better. I had a 3.5 which is a A-/B+ average and I got into some pretty good colleges although not the very best ones.

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a calculation of the average of all the grades you've accumulated over the course of a specific period of your education. For example, your High School GPA would be calculated by taking all the grades you ever got in all the classes you took while in High School and averaging them on A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0 and F=0.0. If you have half "A"s and half "C"s, your GPA would be (4+2)/2=3.0. How does it relate to college? College's typically use your GPA in addition to other means of measuring your scholastic aptitude, such as NSAT, etc., to determine if you're going to have what it takes to make it at their institution and/or if you'll make the cut. They obviously want to admit the best students who apply, and your GPA may make the difference between your getting in, and you're being rejected. Even if you are admitted, your GPA will also be used to determine if you qualify for any scholorships or admission into certain fraternities. It isn't only a measure of how much you know, but how disciplined you are when it comes to studying, and thus how well you are probably going to do once you are away from home and have to decide to study on your own in an environment that is often filled with activities that do not promote good study habits.
