i used those specs and my computer keeps restarting after a month i used it. the first month it was running ok, then entering 2nd and 3rd month it keeps restarting. i was wondering whether it was because the thermal compound, or the PentiumD-MSI 7255 combination that makes the computer restart?

serious answer only please, thank you.

to stop the restarts you are experiencing go to system properties>advanced>start up and recovery>then untick the box"automatically restart",then press apply and ok
this will fix the restart problems but we need to find the reason for the restarts in the first place
you may need to update(flash) your bios, especially since your using a dual core processor, some boards although compatible with pentium D processors still need a bios flash to make the board 100% compatible..check the manufacturers website, you will find the bios number on the post screen at start up
the thermal compound may have been unevenly spread and this may cause overheating but this is unlikely, especially since pentium D processors dont run that hot
if worried remove the old compound and apply a new layer
one reason for the restarts could be a missing riser plug at the back of the mobo causing a short, this would restart the p.c
any problems let me know
good luck mate!

The Pentium D is the first dual core from pentium. It's basically 2 pentium 4's pasted together. I recommend you buying a set of a new motherboard/ram memory and processor. That way you spent just a bit but more it'll last you much longer. Don't invest too much in that old Pentium D

The motherboard supports Socket 775 for Intel Celeron D 3XX, P4 5XX, 6XX, P4EE, Pentium D 8XX, 9XX & Core 2 Duo processors. (without Pentium EE 840), therefore the CPU you have should be fine. The restart problem is more likely to be linked to your operating system!

Without checking it out properly on websites (which you could also do) I would say yes it should be ok.

It fits in the socket on the mobo, it worked. therefore it should work again.
