It is a favourite game of kittens. Try some cat toys to see if the kitten will play with these. Kittens are like children,they exist to play,eat and sleep.Would you rather the kitten chases a ping pong ball all round the room in a mad frenzy while you try to read. Or give up the reading and play with the kit instead.

Give them something entertaining to do or some other distraction...a longish piece of string tied around a ball of paper is a cheap & cheerful option...if you tie 1 end to a fixed point they'll probably entertain themselves!!
If they are really bugging u put them in a large cardboard box or similar so u can get some peace & quiet...
or flash fry with garlic...only joking!!!

Chuck the kitten in another room so it'll have chance to rip that to bits and your free to read a rip free paper. or just give it yesterdays paper while you read today's.maybe its interested in current affairs and strongly disagrees with them.

Try getting him/her a scratching post. They need to scratch to keep the claws trim and sharp.
