If you cling to the past you will be condemned to live in it.
It is not 1945 now, and the world is different.
English is a dominant language by historic accident (just as Greek and Latin once were). Because it is dominant, it is used in commerce and science because dealing with many languages is just too complex and costly. It does not really matter what language it is - but if you decide ideologically that you will not learn it, then expect to be poor - the world is NOT going to beat a path to your door to accomodate you.
And for the Koran - as far as I can see it - with many other religious books - is responsible for most of the world's real suffering.

It's all about power, man. In this life, power is extremely important. US, UK and other English speaking countries have a big power to spread out the language worldwide.
It might be as simple as this: Only the strongest will survive.
Chinese language is behind English, probably will become more and more important these days.
Like everyone said, it's also a bridge for the communication with people from other countries. To me, it's reasonable if the school gives English course instead of Arab. Not everyone can understand Arab. Besides, not every school teaches Arabian, right? There are some schools offering other language course such as Dutch, French, Deutsch.
If you must study Yahudi, why not?? What's the big deal anyway?

Okay, first of all, the fact that many Indonesian with age range 16-25 practice free sex, that has nothing to do with them reading the Qoran or not. Indonesians do not teach their children any knowledge about sex because it's considered taboo. So, the children learn about the subject sex from their friends. Whether the children being taught Qoran, or Bible, or any other religion, if they dont have the right sex education in their early life, the result will be the same.
Your second question of why Arab is not taught in school, is quite simple. As you probably know (I hope you do know that fact) English is an international language used by almost all countries in the world, while Arabian is NOT.
Your third question about our government officials who speak English, I must say that I admire them that they are able to speak English, which shows that they are EDUCATED. It has nothing to do with nationalism.
And lastly, I really think you should at least try to learn English so that you will be able to speak and write PROPER english... or you probably want to use proper arabic.. (which i doubt you have the ability)...or.. just use Indonesian so that only Indonesian readers understand it and you wont cause a total embarassment to every Indonesians alive!
Cheers !

It is not a question of Nationalism. Indonesia is great. English is taught and used in most countries not just Indonesia. this is because English is becoming the international business language. If you want to do business it is better if you speak English. Many Asians have told me. "English is the key to Wealth in Asia" I think that they are right. But you don't have to learn English. Stay just as you are. Besides, if you learned better English you would have to pick up some new ideas as you went along. it sounds like you wouldn't like to do that.

There are also some school who has arabic languange subject, like some of Al-azhar. And some Islamic school is very strict about teaching Islam to the student.
I'm a moslem and I already finished al-qur'an for the 2nd time, I study to read Al-qur'an since I was in kindergarden in arabic writing. You can't blame languange.
English is now used as an international languange. It's important for our network and globalization.
Please use a complete English next time

Those who do free sex & drugs NOT because they never read Al-Quran, but just because they WANT to.
why do we learn English? because it's international language. That's how you talk to people all over the world and get to know each other and be friends. I've been to Arab and THEY speak English! why don't you go there and see it yourself? but make sure you take English course first before you go because they'll be upset if they can't understand you. I can't.

Ahmad Rifai, If you want to fight your enemy... you should learn about your enemy, make your enemy your friend. and dig more about their culture. You should go global with "English or mandarin"
no body care about Indonesia until this country show some international issue. and that's through international language. love your culture and local language, but show the international world a quality. Enrich the brain by reading . books.. and than protect your friends and family from drugs.

English is important its not your enemy (US/UK) that uses English, its the only way that you can communicate to other country, for example. You are using the Web right now and you communicate with me using English. Thats how important it is. You will get few points from Yahoo Answers if you don't post your questions in English.
