You dont have to be a European country to be a member of NATO.

But it does make sense that you have to be a European country to be a member of a European group of countries.

The real question is this... Is Turkey a European country or a Middle Eastern country or an Asian country? Where do you draw the line? Is it just semantics?

I may be mistaken, and forgive me if I am, your question is why do Americans like Turkey more than the European countries do?
Americans will 'like' ANY country so long as it suits them. Look at the greater picture of the world in general, and middle eastern countries in particular. America 'likes' such countries as China, Saudi Arabia but to name a few.
The governments of China and Saudi Arabia are not known for their democracy or their peoples freedoms. In fact, they are the polar opposites to what the Americans would have you believe are their country's values. America 'likes' these 2 countries simply because it is in Americas selfish interest to do so.
Therefore, please do not mistake America's NEED for Turkey as a great love affair between your 2 countries values.
If Turkey was situated anywhere else, it would almost certainly not be 'liked' by the Americans.

Now, should you understand the above point, then it should not be too difficult a logical step to understand why the Europeans do not 'like' you. Simply put.. Europe does NOT NEED Turkey as a political and economic equal.
Turkey is light years away from meeting all of Europes requirements in order to become an equal partner.
Turkish entry will bring with it more headaches to the Europeans than it would in solving any existing economic or political issues.

In closing, a thought just occured; perhaps another reason why the Americans 'like' the Turkish people/government has to do with their shared belligerent bellicose mentality when it comes to solving international disputes?

Just a thought!

Turkey was accommodated as a member of the NATO because it has a strategic location. However, it is not admitted to EU because its economy has no great influence trade in Europe.
