You need to figure out what you want to sell..
You need to figure out a name for you business..The you would go to your local court house and see if it is available..

I did mine this way..
I figured out what I was going to sell
Went to the city court house and found out if the business name was taken..Payed for my right to use that name..Had it published in a paper.. they will give you the names of those papers and have it ran for about a week to establish your name..copy write protected I guess..
Then you go get your license they will mail you a copy of your license to sell and you are good to go .Call your local city information and ask them if you get someone who is helpful (they usually are) they will direct you have a pen and paper ready when you call..
Hope this helps a little..

Starting a business takes three things. The idea, registering the business, then getting it going. As far as registering the business, that varies from state to state, country to country. Assuming you are from the US the best thing you can do is to contact the local office of the Small Business Administration. http://www.sba.gov They have two programs that will tell you how to do it in your state. SCORE and the Small Business Development Centers. http://www.sba.gov/sbdc They are run by very competent counselors and they are free. They will also help you get the business going with financial and management advice.

As far as the idea, well, that's up to you. If you have no idea yet, why don't you go through the yellow pages and see what kinds of existing businesses interest you.

Good luck. I hope you make millions!

The most important first step is to write a detailed business plan.
