I'm planning on moving to Vegas sometime in a few years and just want to know how you deal with the intense heat in the summer and the extreme cold in the winter?

If you figure out how to deal with the heat in summer let me know. I've been here 14 years and still can't stand it. Getting into a parked car, even after a few minutes is pure torture. Most people stay indoors if they can. I feel sorry for the kids because it is so hot they can't play outside. You drive around the family neighborhoods and not a kid in sight. I've been told that tourists from northern areas have left the airplane and fainted from the heat. Today hit 107 F. Everybody who lives here makes fun of the "it's a dry heat." and then laugh. Hot is hot. The dry heat is better but hot is hot. Humidity is usually in the single digits. Sometimes the heat index is actually lower than the actual temperature. Don't under stand that.

We do not have extreme cold in the winter. Usually in the 50s or 60s during the day and dropping down into the high 30s at night.

To be truthful, moving here was the worst mistake I ever made. I dread summer with a passion. But it only last about four months.

The sun is unmerciful too.

I would suggest a visit to Vegas in the summer before you move here.

It's simple - unless you work outside. Everyone goes from air conditioned home to air conditioned car to air conditioned work and returns. And it's not extremely cold in the winter - a jacket suits most people. If you wore a heavy coat, you'd sweat a lot!

While it does get hot during the summer months, the humidity is low so that changes how the heat feels. When it's about 100 degrees here, it's comparable to 90° in a more normal humidity area.

And it rarely gets below freezing in the winter - we generally have one or two nights where we get a hard freeze on the ground, just enough to destroy bougainvillea plants and that's about it.

Electric bills can be overwhelming in the summer months - I suggest going to a metered plan as soon as it becomes available - usually after one year of residency in one location. Be prepared to pay a lot during the summer months initially (our bills were about $450 during that time) but they are small during the other times of the year - our metered rate (which spreads the expense out to an average per month) ended up being $170 per month - easier to deal with in the summertime. Yours will vary, of course, because you'll be in a different house with different usage.

Main shock I had with moving to Vegas, other than the electric bills and car insurance, was the lack of storage in houses. There aren't any basements here - so it's best to trim your possessions down before you move here. I thought I had mine trimmed down so I wasn't paying to move more than necessary - and then I had to get rid of even more stuff after I got here.

due to the revenue produced by the Casinos the utility expenses in Nevada are very low. So heating and air conditioning are inexpensive compared to other states. Vegas real estate was going through a tremendous boom last year but things are a little more tame right now. Check out the foreclosure market. You could make more that you would on the tables.

It is HORRIBLE!! You just try like hell to avoid going outside from noon to 7pm daily from June to September each year. The electric bills are so so expensive, 300-600 per month. The school district is the worst in the country, so I hope you do not have kids. It really is not that cold in the winter, if you have a coat your fine. In January of 2005 it snowed one morning, that was the only time in the 10years I have been in this hell hole. Anyone tells you that you will get use to the heat is either a liar or part lizard. There are so many beautiful cities and towns, really think about it. I can't wait to get out of here as soon as I can afford it.

I moved here for the weather. It is great. You do not have the humidity of other places. I am from the east coast, NYC area and this is great. It has been hot this summer.
So far only one day ran the ac. use the ceiling fan and comfortable. last winter, never wore a coat, just sweat shirts.
