Mute swan are the general white ones with yellow beaks. It's the type not the fact they are quiet (completely opposite in most cases - the only time they are more or less silent is when swimming on the water, had many a swan creep up over the years!!)

You can other sorts such as

Black Swan, Bewick Swan and Whooper Swan.

Take a look on the RSPB website that will give you more details and pic's too.

no only mute swans are mute. there are also black swans and berwick swans.
Mute swans are called mute because it was believed that they only made a noise when they died.
The ones we have on the lake must have more lives than a cat then because they always hiss at my dogs.

No. Have you every heard a trumpeter swan? They rock. I'm not even sure a mute swan is technically mute.

Swans aren't mute! They hiss and make plenty of noise at Hampton and Walton when we take the dog walking there.
