The severity thing is a common misconception, but it's the wrong answer.

A migraine headache is defined as a throbbing, pulsating headache (most often caused by dehydration or a cervical spine misalignment) which may include sensitivity to light and sound, as well as nausea and other symptoms.

Migraines are a form of a headache. If you ever had a true migraine - you would know the difference. Migraines make you nauseous, make light and sound unbearable, makes you feel like someone buried an axe in your head, makes you feel like there is a little person in your head trying to push your eyeballs out - slowly. The slightest sound - the least light makes you feel like you've been shot in space without a space suit. You cannot function at all - as you cannot tolerate light or sound or food or smell of food. You cannot move as the slightest motion gives you a dizzy spell 27 times worse than any you've ever had before. I had one so bad one time - my pillow felt like sharp rocks. And I could not move it because if I did - I knew I was going to spin off the edge of the earth. The only cure for mine was the darkest room, absolutely no light or sound and try to sleep. Ever had a bad hangover? Multipy that by 100 and you have a migraine.

Anyone who's ever had a true migraine will tell you its nothing like a headache (though yes, there are some whopper headaches out there).

Sensitive to light and sound to the point where it hurts you, your eyes and ears still hurt in a dark quiet room. Your head throbs so painfully you can't sleep, your sick to your stomach and 70% of the migraine medicine out there (that specifically target migraines) can make the pain worse before they make it better.

Migraines can be brought on by many things, but typically they are chronic. Some people get headaches all the time, but maybe 1-2 migranes a year. Somepeople get mirgaines that last for days, weeks, or months. People sometimes have to be hospitilized for migraines.

A migraine makes you: sensitive to light and sound. You need to lie down in a dark room, and you may feel nauseated. A headache can be due to poor health, stress, sleeping too much, working too hard.
