I am particularly looking at the Artic Parka and Metropolis Parka by North Face, I love that they are long and appear so warm! Does anyone have any idea's of coats that may be similar in design, but a little cheaper? Say around the $100 - $200 mark? Or anyone had experience with North Face before, and if so what are their products like?

Here are the websites of the two coats I'm looking at, thanks!

If you can not find a coat you like, postpone buying your coat till the start of winter in Europe, 5 months from now.
In September and October the new winter coat collections will arrive in the shops here.
If you can find the coat you want, still consider lugging it around for 5 months till you need it, against having to shop again.
You will find the brand names here too, if even more expensive at times, but you will also find a lot of cheaper brands, as well as non-brand coats in the shops.
Last year I bought a waterproof-shell and fleece-liner coat for about $30 in a supermarket, at the onset of winter. Maybe not as good as North face, but a lot cheaper.

I always travel to europe in the winter and this should be what you need.. Any water/wind proof shell, a fleece jacket, a warm beanie for the head and I highly recommend for the really cold days a scarf or fleece neck wrap that goes over your head and fits around your neck. Having something warm around your neck makes a huge difference. Also plenty of warm socks, great for hiking and warmth. If you want to be even more prepared and you have the room bring some thermal underwear. Brand I dont think is as important as you might think. Just be sure the shell you buy is completely wind and water proof. If brand is very important to you then of course Columbia and North Face would be my picks.

I usually find great deals on Colombia brand jackets, they are pretty close to quality of North Face... try looking into those. Also not sure if your into it, but a nice "pea coat" with a thick sweater and a scarf would work well over there.
