Having moved 4 times in the last year due to husband's job I still have trouble. I have gone through all of our things and have donated a lot of things. If we don't use it anymore or if it has sat in a closet for more than 6 months without being used I have donated it except family heirlooms. Ok how I pack a month before the move date I gather all the boxes that I will need plus extra because you always seem to run out. A week before the move date I pack all the linens that are not in use, all but what clothes we will wear for the next 2 weeks. I pack all of the dishes and pots & pans except the essentials one bowl, one plate, one glass, & a set of silver wear for each member of the family. Then I pack the rest as I go so it's not such a rush. Then you pack everything in to the moving van or trailer putting all the boxes in the front followed by the dressers and icebox other big bulky items and throw the beds on top of all of that. And hope like Heck you don't have to move again for awhile. If you know for sure that you will be moving again soon keep the boxes. That way you don't have to buy or search for more when it is time to move.

Time tested news paper and cardboard boxes from the market, and packing tape. If you can get bubble wrap, ok , but wrapped up in newspaper will protect glass and cnina. Rental vans have cargo blankets for furniture, as a proffession, moving is a learned experience that one does not aquire overnight.

Pack the nonessentials first. 3 months before moving day. Live off essentials only 3 days before.
Better still, hire movers
