if running windows xp:
click start ----> run -----> type "msconfig" and press enter. on the general tab select the radial button indicating "selective startup" -----> then click the last tab "startup" and de-select items by UNCHECKING the items that you do not want to start at windows startup. Most programs you dont NEED to have starting automatically. Keep important things such as antivirus programs, etc. After unchecking all items you do not want to run at startup, close the box and restart. Upon your next windows login, you will see a dialogue box pop up saying startup processes modified. Make sure you check the box that says 'do not show me again' or you will see the dialogue box every time you load windows, it's annoying. It would also be good to clean your registry out and do a hard disk defragmentation for performance enhancements. Enjoy!

In control panel click administrative tools/services and you can then see all the processes.
You have the option of setting these to automatic, manual or disabled by double clicking and selecting the option.
Now some of these functions are obvious, others obscure. Be careful in changing these, if in doubt set to manual and then the process will start when required.
However, if you are not using wireless for example you could disable "Wireless zero configuration". There is plenty of advice available on the web and stopping unnecessary services can speed up your PC noticeably.

Uninstall programs you don't need. Using the Task Manager to end processes is only temporary - you would have to do it every time you restart your computer. Using MSConfig is almost like dabbling in the registry - lots of abbreviations and acronyms and unless you're careful, you can mess it up easily. Simplest way is just to uninstall unneeded programs entirely.

Turn it off for the rest of your life that should in the short run reduce the number of processes.

I would do what everyone else here has suggested and go to msconfig and remove unnecessary startup programs.
I would also consider upgrading you RAM as this will enable your computer to handle more processes without struggling!

everytime you install a program, the wizard will ask you to check a box so that the program will start running everytime you open your computer. just uncheck the box if you don't want the program to run at start up.
i think this may also help. (",)

hi gabe, to turn off some of the things that start up with your computer... click on "start", the click on "run", type in "msconfig"..go to the "start" folder.. and you can turn them off there. be careful to ONLY choose programs! leave the system files alone, like system registry, for example. save the page, then reboot your computer. i hope this helped! :)
