Neither are gender specific. In other words, both a male and female plumber or electrician are called the same thing.

Most occupational words have settled on what was once the masculine form. There are no female specific forms for these careers.
The ones that cause grief are the jobs that stereo-typically end with "man": Repairman, lineman, wheelman, fireman, policeman. Most of these have modernized gender-neutral forms now: Repair technician, line specialist, wheeler, firefighter, police officer. Note the 'er' and 'n' endings. (My American Heritage dictionary offers no alternative for lineman, whether we are talking football or telephone service).
