Rest assured that an asteroid, or comet WILL hit the earth again as it did during the age of the dinosaurs. It has happened periodically over billions of years. Our atmosphere, wind and rain, have hidden and over covered the massive craters. The moon is riddled with gigantic craters which were never erased because it has no air or water. It will happen again. At present, scientists are able to accurately forecast the trajectory of spacial objects headed toward earth, but may be helpless to destroy them. The asteroid's explosive power which destroyed all life on earth at the time of the dinosaurs was equal to the detonation of every single nuclear, and hydrogen bomb that exists on the face of the earth today--in one single massive explosion. We wait.

Nope it doesn't scare me.
I'm an optimist!

"small chance"
that an asteroid will hit the earth in 4/1/2029
Let that small chance be one in a million.

But we have 999999 chances of it not striking.....i go with the probability!

I checked out the date....the body you are talking about is 99942 Apophis.
As of October 19, 2006 the impact probability for April 13, 2036 is estimated at 1 in 45,000
Still I dont think there's any thing to fear....its jst a number game.....and it's NOT UNDER YOUR CONTROL!

I've heard about this. I'm not sure if it scares me that much. I try to understand and accept my mortality on a whole and realize that there are a number of forces outside of my control that could end my life. I just focus on enjoying the time I have, and I think it's funny the things that so many people choose to obsess about when it could all turn out to mean nothing. Just my opinion, but I feel like we'd be better off putting our energy into living and loving well rather than fighting. Do I sound like a hippie? Oh well, I was raised in Berkeley! Does it scare you?

Nope. Nothing like recycling old discounted news.

"how terrible can it be anyway? " If it were to hit, estimates are that it would totally destroy an area the size of Texas. That doesn't include tsumanis, global cooling caused by the debris ejected into the atmosphere, etc. Remember one of the theories as to where the dinosaurs went?

For those worried about 12/24/2012. No problem. You'll have been dead for 12 days by then. http://www.globalpsychics.com/enlightening-you/prophecy/dec12-2012.shtml

No. I have been aware that this could happen at any moment! It is inevitable. I also saw a program where they are working on diverting such asteroids. So, I would think that by then, they just might have the technology to divert any asteroid which threatens the earth!

No, it doesn't scare me. A comet WILL hit the Earth again someday & the Sun WILL consume our planet in the future. I could also be hit by a bus tomorrow. What's the purpose of fearing things beyond my control?

nope
this is 99942 Apohis, listed on NASA's NEO page
since its known that it'll pass very close they did additional measurements on its trajectory and figured it'll miss, but pass closer than the moon orbits earth

i'm still searching a location where we can both have BBQ and see it passing by while having some party.

Nope, not at all.

A previous poster said that if true, it could destroy an area the size of Texas.

Is there any chance of altering its course to make sure that it DOES hit Texas?
