lol I like Marshall D's answer. what I'm worried about is if they keep sending connect messages to the server which i know will fill up the seats on it and this happened to my friend.

I think most firewalls would cover that.

use a firewall.
In linux is more fun. You can choose in firewall combined with iptables to block users from mac adress. A mac adress is an adress like a fingertip of a nic. You can change it but it will not work for ever.

So use a firewall and there set the blocked ip. But if the users chance his ip what do you do? So the best way is to block from ip and mac. So if he changes his ip and the mac don;t match the ip he just stays blocked. If he changes his mac as well and you don't have it stored he is blocked as well. What can he do... scan tha lan for mac adresses and use one of it... That depends on how smart is the user.

You can do that in windows..but i don;t guarantee the same result like in linux. google ;)

There should be a control setting in your firewall that lets you do this, Access your help file in the firewall to see how to do this or visit the maker's web site.

There must be a program for that ... but from the router, you can use an access list to allow or deny specific IPs from accessing your network via certain port

Password protect it, and only give the password to those who you wish to be allowed to access it.

Keep in mind that running a server off your one, personal computer, with all your data on it, is highly risky, and it's quite easy to hack a server, I am told.

I recommend purchasing a new computer solely for running the server, and not keeping any important info on there, or using it for anything else.

Add the IP address and port number to a firewall application (windows firewall inbuilt in windows)

Sometimes someone still find a way to access your computer (for their own sick reasons). The best you can do is try to annoy them as much as possible. Believe me, you can find ways to do that.

well you can close off all ports via your router (if you have one) just make sure you dont close the ones IE and email needs.

But you cant single out a single IP - although you can trackk it and find out where that person is logged on to the internet and go pay him/her a visit -- but that trick is not for public and not for here

You shouldn't really have any people accessing your computer. Thats not safe at all. Check your wireless router settings, if you have a router by going to 192.168.?.?
