Are there any major cities (in terms of population, economy...) which are not surrounded by water (sea, river, lacs, dams...)?
Apparently Johannesburg, South Africa which is a major city do not have any major water source surrounding it (ocean, sea, river, lacs, canals or dams...).
Is there any other major city in the world having a similar condition. Appreciate your help.

What do you consider major and how far away from water does it need to be? Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world and it is about 150 miles from the ocean. Also Moscow is a pretty major city and it's also pretty far from the ocean.

good question...the answer is EVERY city HAD to be situated near a body of water until civil engineers..starting with the Romans and continuing on thru the Brits and French and Americans,........figured out how to build canals and aqua ducts to bring water to cities........no water, no cities...

in America, Phoenix Arizona is now the fourth or fifth biggest city.and it is in the middle of a serious desert......and couldn't exist without Hoover Dam and Lake Mead and a lot of serious engineering....
