Power ON PC. Press F1 or Del to open BIOS. If you are able to open BIOS menu and see that the CD drive and Hard drive are detected, then you've done everything right so far. Load your Win XP CD on the CD drive. Exit BIOS w/out saving. PC will restart and boot from the CD. Install the OS. IMMEDIATELY afterwards, install the motherboard chipset driver. It is usually on the CD that comes w/ the motherboard. If you have onboard video, audio, LAN and modem, their drivers are usually on the same CD. Install them. Next you should install are drivers of devices that you put into the PCI and USB slots. Then, you could now load your favorite softwares.
Always worked for me flawlessly on my laptops and desktops.

Get an A+ book?
Instructions on installing an operating system, drivers, updating BIOS, etc. is too long to give a complete answer. But you can search the Internet for detailed instructions.
For general advice though, please see the answers below...
Oh, and if you've never done a Windows XP installation before, you're going to have a lot of questions during the actual installation. Especially if you do a RAID configuration. This is why you should look at detailed instructions on the Net.
But I'm sure that there will be at least one shameless person that will say that it is super easy to install Windows XP.

It will install itself if you have the build setup to boot from CD first, you need to do that in the BIOS settings. Also the hard drive must be empty, at least no operating system on it.

It is the easiest thing you will ever do I dropped the cd and watched a movie when I came back it was asking for the code that came with it in fact I am using the computer that I did the installation on and it works perfect just remember to get the graphics divers for the mother board from the company that made the chip set eg. if it is part of the intel chip set but intel didn't make it if your using built in graphics you need to go to the intel site anyway. thats the only problem I had.
