It surprised me that he lost. He pushed Iraq out of Kuwait, didn't raise MY middle class taxes. I didn't support him, but I expected him to win. What went wrong?

Ross Perot had a big influence. He definitely took away a lot of conservative votes. But there were other reasons.

As Clinton's slogan said, "It's the economy stupid". The economy was in a modest recession, but not really bad. The fall of the Soviet empire probably slowed defense spending, that might have had some effect on the economy. The cellular and internet industries had not taken off yet (and those industries fueled the economy in the Clinton era). There were no cheap Chinese goods to fuel consumerism. And raising taxes does not help the economy.

"Read my lips, no new taxes". It doesn't help to get caught in a big lie. Conservatives abhore taxes and that is the Republican base.

Bush was way out of touch with what an average American was at the time. He characterized the middle class as earning $200K/year back then. He might have meant that's how much someone who graduated in the middle of his class at Yale law school makes. Who knows? He was out of touch with Joe six pack.

Finally, one of the biggest secrets about Bush's loss was that he was soft on communism. As the Soviet Union collapsed, Bush did everything he could to prop up the Gorbachov regime. What do expect from the former director of theCIA? He was going to miss his old buds. As the former Soviet republics declared their independence, the USA was consistently one of the last countries to recognize those new independent states. Refugees from the former Soviet Union that now lived in theUSA were appalled. This was a block that had voted 90% Republican because they viewed the Dems as soft on communism. Bush lost all of these votes. I know, my family is a Soviet refugee family. I voted for Clinton because I hated George Bush for his betrayal.

He was too honest to rig the elections like his son did, twice. Plus, he didn't give the VERY wealthy the tax cuts they wanted and they withdrew support. He son has more than made up for that.
