if it wasn't, you would be brain dead as you where born, when your brain is squished like a grape. If by luck you did survive birth, the first time you bumped your head, you would forget everything you did in your life.
Bone surrounds, both your brain and spinal cord to protect them. Without that protection, humans wouldn't have a very long lifespan.
