I'll go with Barry Sanders, but am really curious as to what
Bo Jackson would have done had he not injured his hip.
I also liked Walter Payton, he was always on one of the
crappiest teams of all time except the 1985 Bears

Everyone can say jim brown but barry sander is the greatest because heir will never be another back that can do what he did. His agility is superior to any other back and he just made amazing play all the time. If he would have played behind a good line he would have had multiple 2000 yard seasons.

Im actually surprised so few people said Emmitt Smith.
I will readily cede that Barry Sanders is the most talented back to every play....however that being said, anyone compiling a list of "the greatest" has to look at longevity and in that aspect Emmitt clearly is seasons and seasons ahead of barry....
Emmitt also has superbowl rings, to which you would argue that barry had no help..who cares, career success has to be partially measured in championships....
oh and Smith is the all time leading rusher in NFL history.

Barry Sanders. Maybe because im too young to ever watch the Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers. But Barry was sure fun to watch. Just think, he coulda had 20,000 career rushing yards if he hadnt have walked away...

This is and will be one of the toughest questions that continues to be posed whenever fans get together. I knew Walter and like Barry, he played behind some terrible lines but continued to produce. Barry was beyond description with his mobility and lack of a decent line.I also saw Jim Brown in his best form and a great arguement can be made for him. Do we really need to put that "Greatest" tag on any of them? They were all a delight to see play even if you might not like the teams they played for. By placing the "Greatest" tag on one of them, I believe you demean the others. Let's not do that. Let's enjoy what they gave us and wait and see if anyone else comes as close to the total package as guy's like I mentioned.

Barry Sanders. If he would've had any of the offensive lines that these other running backs had, there would be no dispute about the greatest runningback of all time. Everyone would agree on Barry.

I'll go with Jim Brown. His balance, speed, power and strength are unmatched. He has been the benchmark against whom all other runners are measured since his retirement.
Runners-up: (in no particular order)
Barry Sanders
Eric Dickerson
Gale Sayers
LaDanian Tomlinson
Emmitt Smith
Earl Campbell
Roger Craig
Christian Okoye
O.J. Simpson
and the list goes on.

This question keeps coming up and I would say there have been a few great ones over the years from Brown to Sayers to Sanders to Smith etc. but I would say the greatest was Walter Payton.
