"The history talks"?
One can make a comparison with the 1950s as a "dark ages", although the opposition one will face will be overwhelming. It is easy to point out the "restrictive and stifling" societies in the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., but for the typical North American the 1950s was a period of economic growth and relative peace (the Korean War aside). This was the decade that spawned the children of the 1960s - a decade which "blew those bigots away" and much more.
I fail to see Elvis as the only person responsible for "blowing those bigots away", since there were already many musicians of both races performing the same music. The 'Beats' or 'Beatniks' such as Jack Kerouac, Alan Watts, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Lenny Bruce, and many others were just as active, but their work was largely written as opposed to the 45rpm records of rock 'n' roll lovesongs like "Teddybear" by Elvis Aaron Presley.

Dark Age 400-700 AD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_Middle_Ages
The era of the migrations has historically been termed the "Dark Ages" by some Western European historians, and as Völkerwanderung, or "wandering of the peoples", by German historians. The term Dark Ages has fallen from favour since the Second World War, partly to avoid the entrenched stereotypes associated with the phrase, but also because more recent research and archaeological findings from the period challenge old notions of backwardness in the arts, technology, political and social organizations.

The 'Dark Ages' (a pejorative term no longer fashionable with historians) began about 430, as the Roman Empire collapsed. Some would say it ended in 800, with the empire of Charlemagne. Others might extend it as far as about 1200.

I think the 'dark ages' is now. Right here. On this web page. In several ways. I would elaborate, but, since it's dark, I'll refrain. Might hit a wrong key. Hehe.
Good luck to the one with the interesting interrogative statement. Even more to the two above me. Who knew the dark ages was so scary right?
