before looking down, the q is. will my 300W (max) pc power supply be enough to run all the things I'm running now (motherboard, hard drives, etc..)
AND
the geforce 8600 GT graphics card? (requires 300W)?

specs are below..(along w/ the same q)

yeah, i have a pci express slot... but for the power supply.. i have a atx-300-12z power supply.. (basically 300w) found here

http://www.circotech.com/bestec-atx-300-12...-5187-6114.html

would this be enough power for the graphics cards? (both the 8500GT and 8600 GT) cause i read at tom's hardware specs that the 8600GT would require 300W.. would the power supply be enough for the graphics card + the otheres things i'm running at the same time?

8500GT draws about 42 watts and the 8600GT about 45 watts. A 300 watt power supply w/ strong +12V rail (15 amps or higher) on a PC w/ just the basic devices may be able to run above cards. BUT the power supply may run HOT at FULL load (esp. the +12V rail).

Do not rely on minimum power supply recommendations. Higher rated power supplies run cooler and last longer. They also provide more elbow room for future upgrades.

Your 8600GT is a somewhat pricey VGA card so why would you depend on a cheap 300W PSU that probably bundled in your computer case? It's like buying all high components and then buying a cheap PSU for it, you wouldnt want your components to go bad so it would be worth the extra cash for a decent PSU, 300W is minimal, but what happens when you need to add components to your system? extra HDD? maybe look into getting an Antec PSU 500+, Good Luck.

Yes the ATX power supplies...the new ones are the same. You must have a big conector and a small one with 4 wires. And i recomend you to get 600 W :D
